The 2018 Ford Pony Personalizer

At the time of it's debut, the 2018 Ford Mustang offered more vehicle personalization than ever before. While working as Director of Technology for GTB, our Ford clients decided to bolster the 2018 ad campaign to include a personalization item never before seen. We were tasked with creating an experience that allows fans to create their own personalized pony right on their Facebook pages, then use their designs to order prints, clothing and even a limited-edition grille badge for their late-model Mustang.


We worked with some incredibly talented people from AKQA and the Mill to ensure that the technical infrastructure was robust enough to handle the traffic loads that Ford Mustang enthusiasts can create, while performing up to their expectations. The app allowed customers to personalize the Mustang Pony emblem with a choice of four iconic model packs, and generating a vast range of unique designs. The app was built using WebGL with a NodeJS and MongoDB backend. It was hosted on Amazon Web Services (AWS).


From March until June, the agency implemented an out-of-home ad campaign that placed user designs on outdoor billboards in major cities across the U.S.

As mentioned above, the app also allowed Mustang enthusiasts to put their personalized pony designs on merchandise like mugs, hats and t-shirts. Here are a few examples of what people created below:
